Where: Montreal

Sound: Rock n Roll / Jizz Jazz*

Albums: Rock and Roll Night Club (2012), 2 (2012)

Why:  In a world of hyped up DJs and three chord indie bands, Mac Demarco is a musky breath of rock n’ roll air. With his first release (Rock and Roll Night Club) sounding like warped Elvis demos recorded in the 70’s**, his second album, 2, combines lighthearted fun with a mild sense of heartbreaking melancholy. Both albums bring a fresh spin to familiar rock n’ roll, and they are impossible to get out of your head. At only 23, Mac has already released these two highly acclaimed albums, and he and his band have been touring constantly behind them (US and European tours at least twice).

Not only have I personally been obsessed with these albums since the minute I heard them, but I have also fallen completely in love with the man, the myth, the enigma that is Mac Demarco. To start, he’s unbelievably goofy, as seen perfectly in this interview/date with Nylon. He goes from discussing his beauty routine to how he “accidentally” became a high school teacher. He’s got this bizarre sense of humor down; he’s unsettling and grimy in all the right ways, and could probably make anybody hilariously uncomfortable. Case in point: the song “Freaking Out The Neighborhood” is an apology of sorts to his mother for putting drumsticks “where the sun don’t shine” while on stage performing a cover of U2’s “Beautiful Day.” (Here‘s a video, NSFW obviously)

I know you’re thinking that you’d give anything to go on a rowboat date with Mac while he serenades you with his guitar and charms you with his gap-toothed smile (that gap tho). Sorry to ruin that dream, but Mac’s relationship with his girlfriend Kiki (also known as sweet Kiki) is probably the sweetest thing about him. No matter how much success Mac experiences, he wants everyone to know that no matter what, he and Kiki will be *still together*. Doesn’t that just make your heart swell up? If not maybe this will.

One more reason to love him; he’s not afraid to kiss a boy.

Macky D shows no signs of stopping any time soon, so keep your eyes tuned for more from Mac Demarco.

Top Songs:

– Freaking Out The Neighborhood

– Only You

– She’s Really All I Need

By the way, he also makes incredible music videos.

* Mac has personally coined the term “Jizz Jazz” to describe his sound. Watch this video of him in the Jizz Jazz studios here

We might also use this to update you on an artist between projects, we’ll see where it goes. This is a chance for us to discuss some of our favorite people/musicians and for readers to (hopefully) learn something new or give an artist a second…first…eighth chance.
