The Kansas City Chiefs finished their 2025 campaign with a disappointing final record of 6-11, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and finishing the season with a losing record for the first time since 2012.
Despite this, their offensive coordinator for the 2025 season, Matt Nagy, got looks from numerous different teams for their vacant head coaching spots. As a result, the Chiefs looked to mutually depart from Nagy in the offseason and would need to search out a new offensive coordinator and have now found their man in Eric Bieniemy.
The History
Bieniemy was a part of the Chiefs coaching staff from 2013 to 2022, starting out as the running backs coach before being promoted to the offensive coordinator position in 2018. Results were immediate as Bieniemy led one of the most potent offenses in the league’s history.
Headlined by tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and of course the phenom that is quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the team scored 35.3 points per game – the third highest mark in NFL history. The offense would score at least 28.2 points per game in each season that Bieniemy had the reins, as the team would go on to win two Super Bowls with the offense leading the way.
The Departure
After the 2022 season, Bieniemy, after getting looks from numerous teams throughout previous seasons already, finally took a new job, becoming the assistant head coach to Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator for Washington.
The separation wasn’t great for either side, as the Chiefs’ offensive production greatly decreased while Bieniemy was let go after a 4-13 season. Bieniemy was eventually named the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at UCLA in February of 2024. He was dismissed on Dec. 5, 2024, after UCLA finished their season 5-7, ranking 117th in yards per game and 126th in points per game. He then served the 2025 season as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears.
Kansas City, meanwhile, did go on to win another Super Bowl in 2023, however, they were now led by their premiere defense rather than a high flying offense which had decreased to scoring just 21.8 points per game. In 2024, things didn’t get much better, as the team would score 22.6 points per game, still making it to the Super Bowl behind an amazing defense, before the wheels fell off in 2025, scoring just 21.3 points per game and going 6-11 on the season as a team.
Future Outlook
With the return of Bieniemy, many of the Chiefs’ faithful hope that the offense will finally return to their glory days, but some remain skeptical. Bieniemy had superstar receiver Tyreek Hill all but one of his seasons as offensive coordinator for Kansas City as well as possessed wide receiver rooms that are considered to be much stronger than the ones that the Chiefs have wheeled out since 2023.
With that being said, many in Kansas City are still optimistic that an old face can bring back what the Chiefs once had and get things back on track.
