Missouri Hockey hosted Kansas for the latest iteration of the Border War, and left no doubt who the better team was on the ice, clobbering the Jayhawks 8-0.
Mizzou entered the matchup having gone 3-3 in their last six games. Last year, Missouri split its two-game series with Kansas, highlighted by a 4-1 win in Kansas City.
The Tigers seemed to tilt the ice early, erupting with a five-goal period, finished by a buzzer beater with 5.5 seconds remaining. Kansas struggled to handle Missouri’s strong forecheck and constant pressure, spending most of the first period hemmed in their own zone.
The second period brought a brief break on the score card, with only one Missouri goal in the frame, but that didn’t mean the intensity had boiled down at all. Seven total penalties were assessed in the period, as the physicality in the game started to ramp up.
In the third period, the Tigers put the cherry on top, as they rattled off another two goals pushing their final tally to eight. The Tigers were in control the whole night, never letting up defensively, and keeping the shutout on the scoreboard until the final horn. Kansas was never really able to find a rhythm, with multiple turnovers in their own zone leading to goals for Mizzou.
The Tigers asserted their dominance over the Jayhawks, as they etched another win in their historic Border War rivalry.
Missouri and Kansas will meet again tomorrow night in Lawrence, Kansas, as the Jayhawks host the second half of the home-and-home series.
