It’s been 46 years since the greatest moment in sports history occurred in Lake Placid, New York. When the U.S. Hockey team pulled off a miracle on ice to defeat the Soviet Union, on their way to winning the gold medal the next game over Finland. That’s the last time the U.S. men’s team won the gold, but this year the U.S. is poised to end the drought while blasting Free Bird (the goal song of team USA) all the way.
Rise of USA Hockey
Before diving into the team this year, it helps to understand how the U.S. got here. The Miracle on Ice is what made hockey important throughout the country and, along with Wayne Gretzky getting traded to the LA Kings in 1988, that has set off the boom in hockey we’ve seen to this day. The U.S. had invested heavily in the amateur circuit winning five golds at the under 18 world championships between 2011-2017. That core group of players though haven’t had a chance at the Olympics yet due to this being the first time NHL players can play in the Winter Games since 2014. The Four Nations series last year where the U.S. set the tone throughout the series, has only made the Olympics more intriguing this year. As well as the US winning their first IHF championship since 1933 last year. Hockey is in the best spot it’s been in America perhaps ever, not even mentioning preventing a canadian NHL team from winning the cup since 1993 with 32 straight of Lord Stanley’s Cup being home on American soil.
Meet Team USA
There are two names that stand out the most on Team USA and those are the Tkachuk brothers Matthew and Brady. No American hockey fan will ever forget what they did for the country last year when Canada booed our anthem and the Tkachuk brothers both dropped the gloves and threw fists winning their fights against the Canadians in game two of the round robin. The Tkachuks will set the tone physicality wise but also get team USA some offense thanks to their good chemistry with their linemate Jack Eichel. Eichel is having an MVP type season for Vegas right now and is one of the best two-way players throughout the NHL. Eichel has been outspoken about what it means to represent the country during these games and some have questioned why he wasn’t named team captain. What these three share though are they understand the message that lives on in American history thanks to the legendary Herb Brooks. The name on the front means a helluva lot more than the name on the back. If you’re looking for the stars who want to win gold for all us back home, these are your guys.
The Captain for team USA is Auston Matthews. Matthews has the second most goals among active American players trailing only the legendary Patrick Kane. There are questions about Matthews captain credentials though due to his lack of an impact in big moments in both the playoffs and four nations. The Americans also feature the best goaltender in the world, Connor Hellebuyck, who’s won back to back Vezina Trophy’s given to the best goalie in the NHL and won the 2025 Hart Trophy, the NHL’s version of the MVP. Quinn Hughes on the blue line is a huge get for team USA after he missed the Four Nations last year to help shore up the defense which if you had to pick would be the weak spot for the U.S. The U.S. has championship experience on the bench with head coach Mike Sullivan a two time Stanley Cup winner.
The Competition
There is a gap between the top two teams the U.S. and Canada compared to the rest of the field. The Canadians are the only team that the U.S. should even struggle against as the Americans just have too much of a talent gap over the rest of the field. Canada has been the kryptonite of the U.S. as they’ve defeated the Americans in the last two Olympic games with NHL players. Canada also won the Four Nations last year over the U.S. but the U.S. did defeat the maple leafers up north earlier in the Four Nations. The challenge in facing Canada is the offensive onslaught they have with the best player in the world in Connor McDavid joined alongside the likes of Mitch Marner, Mark Stone, Sidney Crobsy, Nathan MacKinnon and others.
How America Takes Home Gold
Hellebuyck is the key for the U.S. hopes of winning the gold. In the Four Nations his Canadian counterpart went on a generational run and that’s what helped Canada win. Hellebuyck is going to have to put on his Superman cape for the U.S. to win it all; it will be a tall task though. Hellebuyck has done it multiple times though for his NHL club and now just needs to do it for his country. Matthews is another player who is a key for the U.S. as they need him to step up as the captain to help shoulder the offensive load. The U.S. also has the revenge factor going for them. Almost every player has spoken about how the loss to Canada last year has motivated them even more for this year to leave it all out on the line for gold. Now you could say every country has that motivation but when you come in second and already have the emphasis on patriotism as we do here in the U.S. it does add a factor no other country can match. The U.S. has the personnel and culture needed to win the gold and that should be the expectation for team USA. Anything less than a gold medal would be a failure, but I have faith that they’ll get it done and bring a gold medal back home for the country.
