Thanks to forcing 30 turnovers, Auburn improves to over .500, snaps a seven game losing streak and beats the Missouri Tigers 71-58.
The momentum never really went Missouri’s way, with the turnover battle being a plus 20 for Auburn. This meant that the press and defensive strategies that Auburn implored tormented Mizzou all game long in this battle of Tigers.
Alongside that, 17 steals, four by both guard Kaitlyn Duhon and guard Harissoum Coulibaly really showed how much more chances Auburn got. Duhon got 19 points and Coulibaly got 13, and despite there being only one other double-digit scorer, forward Khady Leye with 11, there were four other scorers with more than five points.
Mizzou’s star guard Grace Slaughter had 19 and forward Jordana Reisma had ten points, but the supporting cast surrounding them could not get much going, partially thanks to all the turnovers. Usually stout guard Shannon Dowell was the worst offender, having a very off night with only seven points but nine turnovers as well.
Mizzou had much more defensive rebounds, 31 to 15, but had 12 less offensive rebounds than Auburn, which meant that Auburn won the second chance battle despite Mizzou beating Auburn on the boards.
Mizzou had a very accurate night, shooting 57% from the field, but attempted a staggering 34 less shot attempts than Auburn, which is why the turnover battle being so lopsided for Auburn mattered so much down the stretch.
Both teams struggled from the line, with Mizzou hitting 67% of its free throws compared to Auburn’s 69% from the line, but there were a total of 34 free throws attempted across both teams, a high amount.
Mizzou has many questions to answer heading into the SEC Tournament, but its next opponent is not going to hold any punches, as they travel to Baton Rouge to take on No. 7 LSU.
Auburn just snapped its longest losing streak of the year, and now travel back home to take on No. 24 Georgia, a bitter rivalry.
