After a 5-1 defensive masterclass against the Tigers yesterday, the Miami Redhawks (14-4) crushed the Missouri Tigers (7-13) by a score of 8-2 to take the Mizzou Invitational.
Miami’s Lea Chevrier had a career defining day on the mound, with an outstanding 152 pitches to only five hits allowed. Despite having nine walks, Miami’s excellent defensive play kept the Tigers at bay once again.
Standing off against her on the day was Missouri pitcher Cierra Harrison, who had only two and a third innings of action, five hits allowed and four runs. Ultimately, Chevrier and Miami were a step ahead from the jump.
The Tiger’s issues of standing bases continued, with four of the seven innings ending with stranded runners. This flaw kept Missouri from having chances to take the lead, with a bases loaded situation in the second inning being the most blatant of these situations.
Another issue the Tigers will have to solve is the pitching and defensive play, which was far inferior to the Redhawks’ on the day. 12 hits, two doubles, two stolen bases and two home runs across the three pitchers that the Tigers put on the mound is far from ideal for a team that still has to take on the ranked teams and championship contenders of the SEC.
Following their victory, the Redhawks continue their winning ways of the invitational. After dominating the hosts of the tournament, consider Miami to be a top player in the MAC.
