Mizzou came into Sunday looking for a four game sweep over UIC, the previous three games of the series had been some of the most chaotic games Tiger fans have seen all season.
Series Recap
Game One
Game one on Thursday saw Mizzou blow a four run lead and leave the game tied at six, entering the seventh inning stretch. In the bottom of the seventh, back to back home runs from Eric Maisonet and Isaiah Frost gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead. Mizzou would hold on 9-8, as Pitcher Sam Rosand would earn his first career save.
Game Two
An extremely chaotic comeback that saw the Tigers barely keep their win streak alive yet again. The game started on Friday night, and it was all Flames as they jumped out to a 12-1 lead after 3 innings played. Mizzou cut into the lead, posting three more runs before play was suspended due to rain. The game resumed Saturday afternoon, and the Tigers got right to work with a run in the bottom of the fifth. MIzzou would plate four the following inning and cut the lead to just three runs. Tigers bats stayed hot as they completed the comeback with four combined runs between the seventh and eighth. Cameron Benson delivered the go ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, his first of the year.
Game Three
More action between the two squads on Saturday night, saw Mizzou get another win to continue their hot start to the season. Josh McDevitt got the start and came up huge for the Tigers, throwing five scoreless innings, striking out seven, and allowing just one hit. Hitting also came through for Mizzou, putting up two runs in the first and continued their success throughout. A 7-0 win gave the Tigers a series win and a chance for another series sweep.
Sunday’s Highlights..
Kehlenbrink Dominance
Brady Kehlenbrink got the start for the Tigers on Sunday, his fourth of the season, the lefty had his game on point. He opened the game with back to back strikeouts and would eventually reach a total of 11 K’s. Kehlenbrink consistently fanned the Flames’ batters, striking out exactly two batters in his first five innings. In his six innings of work, he only let up three hits, no walks and picked up his third win of the season. He also let up no earned runs which is his first time doing so in an appearance of 2+ innings.
Tigers Keep on Hitting
Mizzou continues to be relentless at the plate, coming through with 10 runs and 13 hits. Getting out to hot starts has been consistent for the Tigers. A Jase Woita two run shot in the bottom of the first got the Tigers started. Mizzou was mashing at the plate today when they would end up hitting three consecutive home runs in the bottom of the third. Kaden Peer who is coming off an injury got the party started, Cameron Benson would follow it up hitting his third of the year. On the first pitch Pierre Seals saw he completed the trilogy and gave the Tigers a five run lead. Another run added in the fourth, and three plated in the fifth the Tigers put up 10 runs, enough for a run rule victory.
Extra Notes
Mizzou earns their fifth run rule victory of the season, and first since February 24th against Arkansas Pine-Bluff.
The Tigers shut out their opponent for their first time all season and the first time in since 2023, going their last 156 games without a shutout win.
Mizzou’s 12 game win streak is the longest since their 20 game heater in 2017.
Utility player Tyler Macon came into Sunday both top 10 in Batting Average (.500) and Runs Batted in (22)
UIC was shut out in the last 22 innings of the series after scoring 20 runs in the first 12 innings of the game.
