Last Friday at the annual True or False film Festival in Columbia, ESG took to the stage. This was the band’s first— and last —Missouri stop as the band continues its final tour.KCOU sat down and spoke with Renee Scroggins, vocalist and one of the sisters who founded the influential punk-funk band, about the creation of their sound during the 70s South Bronx, N.Y. We talked about their concert highlights, how a “safe-sex” talk with her daughter turned into a song, and her experience with the band’s songs being sampled. Its song, “UFO,” has been sampled over 500 times by artists like MF Doom, Wu-Tang Clan, and the Beastie Boys. Listen to the episode to hear more about how ESG’s music transcends generations and spaces.
